• 2/18/11 - about half the debut album…

… has been posted on YouTube at this point, as another duty free means to listen to the tunes…

the one i posted today is MIRAGE, one of my favorites from TGB. it leans heavily towards my electronic and orchestral influences, but its still pretty dirty and grimy… cause it’s about fucking.

to be more specific, its about how fucking can lead to really fun times… and really-not-fun times.

lots of real world samples in that one also, which is something ive gotten back into lately… most interestingly, the ones at the end when it gets really nasty… it was a audio recording i had made to prove a point. its got some interesting reactions in there…

its also one of the first tracks i ever played a real piano on.
    Piano 1

(forgive the ghetto instamatic shots, theyre all i could dig up on the spot)

my piano, that i got from my good friend (and de facto big sister) Tish has been tucked away in storage for years cause its a drag and super expensive to get moved into my place in oakland… but it bums me out every time i think about it not being here. its a nasty old upright and the sound board is stamped 1888, meaning its really fucking old. you cant tune it at all for fear of destroying the piano itself (something to do with the internal tension) so whenever i tracked with it, id have to spend some time pitching things around to make it fit with all the other, actually in tune instruments.
    Piano 2

    anyways… heres “Mirage“. dig it.

    2/12/11 - today…

it was a beautiful day outside today, and while i did make it out for a sandwhich with Mikey and Ro, i spent the rest of the day indoors (minus the occasional patio smoke with Mikey) working on some of the final visual attributes to the nSLASHa App…

what little fresh air i got today...

what little fresh air i got today...

after getting the green light last week, we have been able to move forward much more determinately, and were really coming up on the point where were doing final tweaks and have the overall vibe and style nailed to the fuckin cross… im super pumped about this thing, its still the coolest band related software ive seen to date, and it stands on its own as a piece of art, not just visually and audio wise but from a software point as well. its pushing just the right buttons i like to push while remaining functional and open… you will be able to do something with it, not just stare at it. software can go both ways, people need to understand this, particularly artists. if i (we) fail miserably, so be it… but i think either way we’re pushing open a door, and im not afraid of whats on the other side.

in other news, Mitch and i ripped up some more of the Johnski tracks the other day… (happy Bday mitch!) its a track were hoping to get paid for, but in the meantime were gonna continue to keep tweaking it and maybe itll be the first original Johnski & Jonski beat… now all we need is a band name…

and in Lucid Mechanism news, theres a new gig March 19th at Public Works in SF… more on that later, but we spent some time last night bringing some new material to the table, with some positive results, so im excited that weve got more than just 2 new tracks in the works…

    more soon kids…

    2/8/11 - Sorry, vacation:

Forgot to mention that the nSLASHa App has been given the official go-ahead by the fruit company itself… Fuckin-yay son!

    1/11/11 - some new 80’s type shit…

along side the Lucid Mechanism stuff ive bee doing lately (which BTW theres an fucking cool ass song i wrote with them, aptly called “reunion” that we may be playing live by the end of this month – more on LM live later…)

anyways, ive been working with my boy Mitch Eaton on some remixes of old video game shit from the fuckin 80’s that sounds pretty sick… C64 style…

its all just work in progress stuff, and weve mumbled a bit about taking it out live in the future, but for right now you can peep the rough edits of “battle valley” and “outrun” we did here

    outrun

    yay 80’s.

    12/7/10 - about GAMH…

the night at GAMH was amazing… (yes it took me forever to put this together)

    LM Live

im on my way on the train, and im trippin cause i hate trying to catch a cab in the city when ive got my bass and my gear… it never fits in the trunk easliy, and its a real drag when its fuckin raining… but as soon as i rise up out of the BART station, theres a van taxi right across the street, staring at me like hed been sent there to wait for me… which at first was kinda creepy, but cool… however I was immediately pulled over by a cop, nearly 30 seconds after getting on the move, as my driver made an illegal left off of market…take your time piggy

so anyways i get out of the cab… the stage hands grab my shit and im headed inside… i move into the dressing room, we soundcheck about an hour later… then i post on the couch (again listening to Arvo Part, with a side of Pretty Lights) while i read Titus Andronicus for like the 5th time… unfortunatly were one of only 2 groups that would play tonight that were original acts… so most of the backstage banter is about band members children and their stocks going up and down… and while im sure these are nice people, its not nearly my desired scope of artistic conversation.  so i hide out drinking a handful of things, playing the songs to warm up (its like 20 degrees under the stage)… then we got fed, which was amazing and the kitchen staff was nothing short of cool as fuck…
Timos mind being blown by getting fed at a gig...

a few hours later my people show up (including Mike and Jen Cash, whom i havent spent a proper amount of time with since the last nSLASHa gig – in other words, too long) and its nearly time for us to hit.  i post up at the bottom of the stairs leading to the stage, to do my usual yelling screaming and jumping around bit to balance out the adrenalin rush… and then… pow… game time. Stairs to the stage

the set is solid, the sound on stage isnt great or nearly loud enough to really get my skin crawling the way i like, but the set feels good and the crowd feeds off of that.  jen and mike get some bad ass shots (as expected) and shortly after its determined that we need to get the fuck out of this place – theres a cover band doing a version of “smells like teen spirit” and i want to shoot someone immediately.

so for various reasons we bounce to NBeach for phillies and burgers – (cause golden boy is oh so closed at this point)

as im trying to order a burger for the lady and i, an old woman rolls up on the joint and tries to jack the proprietors recycling bin, so i bark at this bitch pretty hard cause shes interrupting my fuckin order and pissing off the nice lady that would shortly be preparing said order ;)

then off to typical hideaway haunt columbus cafe for another round with good homies as we wind down.

then we pack 4 tons of gear, people and a bike into the back of a jeep and head back to oak, where i macked a bowl of corn pops and watch a doc on ancient greece… then passed the fuck out.

thanks GAMH, you were fun.  and tons of love to my friends who paid good monies to come and show their love… and to mike and jen for shooting… it was really fucking great to be in the presence of you all.

    11/30/10 - Lucid Mechanism tomorrow night @ Great American…

nSLASHa side project – Lucid Mechanism – tomorrow night 10PM @ Great American Music Hall

    http://on.fb.me/eYbZ0h

This gig is in the name of all of those hours spent in band class in elementary/high school that became the gateway to our mutual obsessions with music. Come represent, because music is always one of the first things to go when the school budgets get raped.

    11/9/10 - couple of things…

Couple of things to mention here…

I’ve been a little quiet lately but for good reason. Some of the things currently in the works are:

    1. the Illusion of Hope is now on iTunes. Check it. You can “donate” to the cause by clicking the “buy” button
(PS the “buy” button works for all my other tunes as well!)

    2. Playing with Lucid Mechanism again.
Two dates before the end of the year. A private party this month and a show at Great American Music Hall on Dec.1st to benefit the MuST (Music in Schools Today) Foundation.

    2. A “remix” as it were for my friends and fav bay band Death Valley High. You can check them out here. Do it, they’re siiiiiik.

    3. Sculpture. See photo. I’ve just been looking for other ways to experiment, and I chanced upon this wire stuff about a year ago, with 3 or 4 different pieces and a handful of shit around the house… This piece is made up of about maybe 50′ of wire attached on a glass plate and free formed by hand for a little under an hour, which is quite a contrast from the ammount of time it takes me to finish a fucking song… so i like it.

    IMG_0042

    4. I also did an interview (my first over the phone) with the ever supportive Jessica of Phoenix Always Rises… ill repost and link when that goes live…

I know the LM gig at GAMH is pretty expensive so frankly i dont expect anyone to come out, though it would be great for the kids studying music that the $$$ goes to… but when theres a gig with a reasonable cover you’ll be the first to know!

At least in the meantime you can still support me by grabbing some of my tracks on the cheap!!!

10/4/10 - “the Illusion of Hope” (revisited)

So… This track has a little history behind it. Originally released around ‘02 “the Illusion of Hope” was a bit of a segue into another track… An instrumental, complete with a few tame recordings of the ocean I had made in pacifica and one of the few tracks at the time I had produced completely independently of the rest of the band.

It was one of my personal favorite pieces I’d ever done, but the original production left – something to be desired – but that particular record had taken nearly 9 months to complete and I didn’t have the time and abilities then to flesh it out like I’d imagined.

Now fast forward a handful of years. Whit and I grabbed a car and headed down to Half-Moon Bay a few weeks ago, and after making some new and more interesting recordings (and videos ;) I was inspired to return to that original Pro Tools session, and finish what I’d started.

And, with Mikey away in France for a while, I had some time to kill before I could release “Just As I Thought”, so this seemed like the perfect way to occupy my mind for a bit…

And incidentally, the whole idea behind F/ux was that it was supposed to evolve, and not be some static thing I released and forgot about a year later. So releasing this song as the second single before “JAIT” started to make a lot more sense and seemed more in keeping with the original concept.

I spent a few weeks tracking new parts (including the waves of Half-Moon bay) tweaking and sweetening what was good from the original, cutting what sucked from the original, mixing and mastering myself. I finished around 5PM (sunday Oct 3rd) afternoon, and the song itself was online just a few hours later… Which is pretty fucking cool if you think about it…

So here it is: “the Illusion of Hope”. Re-imagined and complete.
