7/24/10 - … what have you done WITH ME lately?!?!?!?

so… in between drawing on post-its for weeks… (see below for the beginnings of an explanation) i thought id share a little bit…

(incidentally, 7/22 was the 2 year anniversary of “the Great Betrayal” release… we spent it wandering the train tracks around the docks and catching up with some old friends… smoking and drinking… unfortunately we are having a disagreeance with our sd card reader at the moment, so no pics yet…)

other things ive been up to:

well… ive been looking like an asshole wearing fucking hipster glasses…

…spending time with Whit on the patio, drinking blue moons (with a slice of orange, of course) and catching up after her return from israel…

and just basically enjoying what the beautiful city of Oakland has to offer me… you know… police shootings, riots, earthquakes and late fees for late rent payments.

(for the uninitiated: Oakland!)

but on the art/music side of things, i have 2 new songs, 90% complete, that im ready to start mixing… the next  batch of “F/ux” tracks… and im thinking “whats it going to take to make these releases interesting socially, for you AND for me?”

remember… the whole concept behind “F/lux” is its supposed to evolve over time… it AND ME really… its a chance for me to spread my wings and stretch my legs a bit… im the kinda person that needs that… OFTEN…

like most other artists, im trying to get/keep fans involved… to support me, and continue to enable me to do what i do.  while many of you have <a href=”http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-great-betrayal/id282595176″purchased music from me”</a> or supported me in other ways (thanks to all), i make shit for money on my art… (hence the full time apple gig) – either because its crap and im the only one that likes it, or because i havent reached a large enough audience… YET…

basically, the more involved you guys are, the more WE enjoy the experience, the more the word spreads and the more im able to do what i love doing, and the more youre able to keep enjoying it… so the gig here is trying to include you in what i do… and to say thanks for supporting me over the last couple of years.

really, THANK. YOU. ALL.

ive thought of a few different ways to do this… theres obvious ones, but those are fucking boring cause everyone else has done them already, not really my style.

so, it became necessary to think of how NOT to do this… sooo… whats everyone else doing??? then ill know what to avoid, right?

a lot of bands are posting their multi-tracks these days, trying to get you “involved” by remixing their material et al… COOL! – if im someone interested in music tech, have a computer with the software capable of downloading, remixing, and reposting THEIR material… then thats great. it propagates the bands music and really makes me feel like i did a lot to help their career… sorta… i guess…

dont get me wrong, thats really fucking cool for those of the populous that are into it… but even for me, an obvious gear-head and studio wing-nut, i brought up some different artists tracks for remix once and after about 20 minutes was bored to shit… cause im thinking “theyve already nailed this song! thats why it is the way it is on the album! what the fuck am i doing working on THEIR material when i could/should be working on my own?”

i was thinking that while that all fine and cool, it doesnt really let YOUR voice be heard… it doesnt really let the fans contribution shine through… cause its limited to what the band, in the end, decides should be released, and doesnt really account for those who have no fucking interest in making their own music and have no desire to sit for hours reworking pre-determined material…

also, i was also looking at things like “american idol”, where everyone wants to be some kind of pop star and the like… so evidently theres a desire out there to have a voice and be heard, no matter how terrible… :) just search youtube for everyone and their grammas singing covers…

buuttttt… what if i actually wanted YOU, the FAN, to be IN a song of MINE?

well… thats where this was/is headed…

there were a few other ideas that sounded great, but after our initial attempts we realized in the end it wouldnt be as fluid as it needed to be… or nearly as intuitive…

and ive spent about the 2 months or so with my newest technical cohort, Mike Urell, making that happen. i think you guys are either going to love this, or think it sucks shit. either way mike and i think its fucking awesome, and we think were about 2-3 weeks away from it being in your hands.

chipping away...

nobodys done anything quite like this before…  were very excited to be the first.

now agreed, im a nobody… BUT, there are still the handful of you out there in the world that listen to my music almost religiously write me to tell me your thoughts on how great you think it is… and im super super fucking grateful. i wanted to find a way to reflect that… by grouping all of us together that give a shit, so we can let the rest of the world know…

soooo…. the next “F/ux” song is titled “Just As I Thought”, and its been more or less complete for a few months now… and ive been ready to mix and release it… but… theres a section in the song, where i do one of those big punk rock chant “HEY!”s, similar to “Severing Ties” from “the Great Betrayal”

and i thought… well, i could just stack a shit ton of me yelling “Hey!” on top of each other – all day long in the studio… OR… i could get a bunch of friends to come to my place and scream their fucking guts out all day… ORRRRR…

and for now, ill leave it at that…
